User friendly troubleshooting assistant for Mac OS X
Snow Leopard compatibility [feature 2845796] (Thanks again to Steve Anthony)Improved limits on output from syslog to STDOUTSimplified startup of services on Leopard and Snow LeopardFixed bug in creation of user account lists in Snow Leopard where system accounts would show upS.M.A.R.T. status verification is now being done in the expert mode. I still want to implement this using smartmontools, but for now diskutil will do.Blessing of Mac OS X System folders on attached volumes is now possible. This is a primitive bless, ie, it does not create boot files, but simply blesses the chosen System folder and (optionally) sets it to be used for startup on next launch.

Install it when you DON'T have problems, and use it when you DO..
You can't install Applejack when the computer is having serious problems. You have to install it when the sun is shining (i.e. the computer is working properly).!Otherwise, you have to use single-user mode and run the fsck routine. But much easier to use Applejack instead, so install it while you can.
Pros:
Small, free, effective.
Cons:
Nees to reassure would-be installers more clearly which OS versions it'll work with More

I don't get it.
So after reading that this program allows you to run a permissions repair on a disk that won't boot up, I downloaded it to run on a Macbook that won't boot up at all (gets stuck at the spinning dial, but it will boot into single user mode) and I can't find the installation disk to run a permissions repair. The instructions simply say to double click the pkg to install it. That's very nice if I wanted to install it on the Mac I'm using to download the software but the whole point was to get it to run on a Mac on which I can't load the GUI at all. There are no instructions that explain how to actually get the utility onto the machine that is having problems. More
